Unbrowse SNMPv3 User and View ManagementAre you acutely aware of security weaknesses in SNMPv2, yet not quite ready to let go? Does the thought of managing SNMPv3 users and permissions seem daunting ?
Unbrowse SNMP is targeted at network admins like you! Powerful new tools takes the pain out of SNMPv3 User Security and View Access Management. Now you can work with SNMPv3 users and permissions just as you would with a Unix or Windows user.
Help ! I dont have any SNMPv3 users configured. Where do I start ?
For those new to SNMPv3 this may sound strange - "You need atleast one SNMPv3 user preconfigured before you can create others". The next question is - "Well, then how do I create the first user ?". This is dependent on your network element.
Should there be any special rights for the initial user ?
Yes, the initial user must have full read/write access atleast to the security portion of the MIB tree (the USM MIB and the VACM MIB). For example in Cisco IOS you would typically use :
snmp-server view myAdminView 126.96.36.199.6.3.16 included
What should I do with SNMPv2 community strings ?
We recommend that you get of SNMPv2 altogether once you have SNMPv3 up and running. Using shortcuts such as the com2sec directives to map SNMPv2 community strings to valid SNMPv3 security groups defeats the very purpose of moving to SNMPv3. See here how to disable community strings in Cisco gear (Disable SNMP community strings)
