Common Problems
Help ! I dont have any
SNMPv3 users configured. Where do I start ?
For those new to SNMPv3 this may sound strange - "You need atleast one
SNMPv3 user preconfigured before you can create others". The next
question is - "Well, then how do I create the first user ?". This is
dependent on your network element.
Should there be any special
rights for the initial user ?
Yes, the initial user must have full read/write access atleast to
the security portion of the MIB tree (the USM MIB and the VACM
MIB). For example in Cisco IOS you would typically
use :
snmp-server view myAdminView 1.3.6.1.6.3.16 included snmp-server view myAdminView 1.3.6.1.6.3.18 included
What should I do with
SNMPv2 community strings ?
We recommend that you get of SNMPv2 altogether once you have SNMPv3 up
and running. Using shortcuts such as the com2sec directives to map
SNMPv2 community strings to valid SNMPv3 security groups defeats the
very purpose of moving to SNMPv3. See here how to disable
community strings in Cisco gear (Disable
SNMP community strings)
